“Bundle” released in large quantities by coral spawning = 22nd, off Yamato Village, Kagoshima Prefecture (provided by Katsuki Ko)

Off the coast of Yamato Village in Amami Oshima, Kagoshima Prefecture, a summer tradition, coral spawning has begun. A large amount of small particles with a diameter of about 0.5 mm called “bundles” containing sperms and eggs were released at night, dyeing the dark sea pink.

Katsuki Kouki (51), chairman of the Amami Marine Life Study Group, took a picture on the night of 20th to 22nd in the sea area at a depth of 5 meters off the coast of Kuninao, Yamato Village. He was able to confirm the spawning of about 10 types of coral, and said that he could not see the front at the peak. “I was impressed by the powerful coral activity.”

Many of the Amami corals died due to the feeding damage and bleaching of the crown-of-thorns starfish, but they have been recovering since then. Chairman Xing said, “I hope many larvae will take root.”
