The first fossil of the firefly family confirmed in Japan (provided by Toshiaki Tanaka)

The Shimonita Town Natural History Museum in Gunma Prefecture announced on the 28th that a fossil with a body length of about 11 mm found in a stratum estimated to be about 3.5 million years ago was found to be the first firefly family in Japan. .. It is said to be a valuable research material. In November 2020, a paper was published in the specialized magazine “Monthly Musi”. A permanent exhibition is scheduled for February this year at the Natural History Museum.

I found it by Iichi Mogi (deceased), a former teacher in Shimonita Town. He continued to collect fossils at Kabutoiwayama on the border between Nammoku Village, Gunma Prefecture and Saku City, Nagano Prefecture. It is said that it is close to the Munekuriiro firefly in the modern species.
