Japanese eel fry, glass eel (provided by the 11th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters), for which uncertain international transactions have been pointed out.
Imports of “Hong Kong-produced” Japanese eel fry and glass eels, whose source is unclear, to Japan are continuing, and the total amount of this term from November last year to April this year was 6 tons. It was revealed from Japan’s trade statistics on the 18th. There is no actual fishing for glass eels in Hong Kong, and experts point out that it is highly possible that they were smuggled from Taiwan, which bans exports. Some say it should be subject to legislation.
According to the Fisheries Agency, the amount of glass eels collected in Japan from November last year to April this year was 11.3 tons. The total amount including imports is 18.3 tons, of which 30% is from Hong Kong.
