A state of the starry sky observation project carried out by the Ministry of the Environment in Yoron Town, Kagoshima Prefecture in August (provided by the Ministry)

The season when the air is clear and the stars look beautiful. The Ministry of the Environment will carry out a project to promote starry sky observation nationwide from January 4 to 17 next year. The aim is to raise awareness of environmental conservation, saying that “light pollution”, which makes it difficult to see the starry sky due to artificial light such as excessive night lighting, is becoming more serious, especially in urban areas.

According to the Ministry of the Environment, there are two types of observation methods: (1) naked eye (2) shooting the night sky with a digital single-lens camera. With the naked eye, we will take part in the “Globe at Night” conducted by an NPO in the United States and see Orion.

The digital camera shoots the night sky in manual mode. Send data from the Ministry of the Environment site. The ministry will quantify the brightness of the night sky and consider publishing the ranking.
