Crowdfunding, which was started by the Mizusawa VLBI Observatory (Oshu City, Iwate Prefecture) operated by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, has recently exceeded the target amount of 10 million yen. When an international team including the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan announced on the 12th that it had succeeded in shooting a supermassive black hole in the Milky Way galaxy, donations from people supporting the research surged.
The donations will be used to hire young researchers with doctoral degrees and to maintain research facilities. As of the 20th, one month after the start, more than 640 people donated and reached about 16.8 million yen. The target amount will be doubled to 20 million yen and will continue until June 17, which was originally planned.
