Kansai Electric Power Mihama Nuclear Power Plant Unit 3 = Mihama Town, Fukui Prefecture

On the 23rd, Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. started and restarted the reactor of Mihama Nuclear Power Plant Unit 3 (Mihama Town, Fukui Prefecture), which has been in operation for more than 40 years. This is the first time in Japan under the current rule that the operation period is “40 years in principle and 20 years at the longest”. Ten years after the accident at TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, we will enter the “60-year driving era.” Mihama Unit 3 has been in operation for the first time in about 10 years. The anti-terrorism facility required for the nuclear power plant is incomplete and will be shut down on October 23, before the installation deadline, so it will be in short-term operation for four months.

While the government is advocating the use of decarbonized power sources, it is also showing an attitude of reducing dependence on nuclear power. The restart, while new expansion is difficult to predict, is likely to affect the operation plans of other nuclear power plants.
