Overall app installs are up by 5% in this quarter on Google Play Store and 15% on the iOS App Store. Apps like Zoom and Houseparty have become new modes to communicate with each other. There is a surge in use of social media platforms such as TikTok and mobile games like PUBG. A US-based data analytics platform SimilarWeb has shared the data.
The video calling application, Zoom is used by companies for the work-related collaboration. Even schools have adopted Zoom to conduct classes. The monthly downloads of Zoom have increased from 5 lakh in February to over 87 lakh in March.
Houseparty is yet another social gathering platform, which is used by friends and family to play games and talk to each other. The app has now seen 328,000 monthly active users (MAUs), recording 16x jump. The average time spent using the app has increased by 8x to 24 minutes.
With schools and colleges being shut during the lockdown, many have resorted to e-learning platforms. Startups like Byju’s, Topper, Vedantu have announced free courses for users. These platforms have reported record in new sign-ups. Unacademy announced students spending 1 billion minutes on its platform in March.
Even the e-commerce sector is expecting a surge in demand for grocery and infection control items. These companies are expected to take a $1 billion hit in sales due to the lockdown. Even after the lockdown, industry leaders expect that social distancing will become a new norm which will create a good opportunity for online platforms to strengthen their user base.
