Digital India: 50 crore internet connections milestone reached

India has registered 50 crore internet connections as of September 2018. The country has reported a steep surge of 65% during the Modi government’s tenure. The latest information released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) reveals this positive growth in the internet adoption in the country.

By the end of September 2018, India had a total of 56 crore narrowband and broadband connections. In March 2016, there were just 34 core connections, which increased to 42 crore by March 2017. The number touched 51 crore by end of June this year and 56 crore by September 30, 2018.

The adoption of internet connections is in line with the Modi’s government’s vision for a Digital India. The central government launched its flagship program ‘Digital India’ in 2015. The initiative was planned to ensure that all government services reach the Indian citizens through the medium of internet.

The government launched various schemes like e-health, e-education, digital locker, and National Scholarship Portal under the Digital India project. In December 2015, Union Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had said, “My plan is to make 50 crore internet connections in India by 2018.” The government had launched various schemes to work towards this goal.

Out of 56 crore connections, 36 crore connections are in Urban areas while 19.4 crore are in rural areas. Internet service providers throughout the country have started focusing on expansion in rural areas. The mobile internet gave an additional boost to the overall internet adoption. The entry of Reliance Jio gave the much-needed thrust to the ecosystem of mobile internet across country.

The top five states including Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat account for 20 crore of all internet connections in the country. The government’s BharatNet project has helped in reaching remote areas of the country. The project has connected 1.1 lakh gram panchayats with optical fiber internet.
