The White House told the reporters that the president will soon announce an executive order pertaining to social media. On Thursday afternoon, the US President signed the order. The order tries to exert control over social media giants like Twitter and Facebook. The platforms have been the target for accusations of political bias.
President Trump has been vocal about accusing Twitter, Facebook of stifling conservative voices. The order comes after Twitter decided to append fact-check labels to two of his tweets this week.
According to the US President, such platforms have unchecked power to censor, restrict, virtually any form of communication between private citizens. He said, “We can’t let that happen. especially when they go about doing what they’re doing because they are doing things incorrectly, they have points of view.”
The accusations are more focused on fact-check services that these platform shave added. The services are added to reduce misinformation and fake news. President Trump said that Twitter has become an editor with a viewpoint. He also mentioned Google, Facebook doing the same thing.
While Trump claims that the executive order aims to uphold the free speech and rights of people, his opponents share an opposite view. Trump opponents claim that the executive order is an attempt to tame the same social media platforms.
