The search engine firm is working closely with the Indian government authorities to help internet users fight Covid-19 pandemic. Users across 30 cities of India can find these locations on Google Maps, Google Search, and Google Assistant. They simply need to search for ‘Food Shelters in ‘ or ‘Night Shelters in ‘. The feature will also be available in the Hindi language.
In the coming days, Google will make it even easier to access these features. In subsequent updates, Google will roll out quick access shortcuts beneath the search bar on the Maps app. The food and shelter pins will appear on the map by default.
Google India’s Senior Program Manager, Anal Ghosh said, “As the COVID-19 situation develops, we are making a concerted effort to build solutions that help people during these times of need. Highlighting the locations of food and night shelters on Google Maps is a step to make this information easily available to the users in need, and ensure they can avail the food and shelter services being provided by the government authorities. With the help of volunteers, NGOs, and traffic authorities, we hope to convey this important information to the affected people, many of whom may not have access to a smartphone or mobile device during this time.”
To find out food and night shelters near you, you can enter the query into Google Search or ask the Google Assistant on smartphones or on KaiOS device. The company is working to introduce this feature in other Indian languages. The feature is currently available across 30 cities in India.
