A survey conducted by DevOps automation firm, Sonatype talks about the productivity of developers. The survey is based on feedback from 5000 developers across 70 countries. Happy developers are 3.6x less likely to neglect security when it comes to the quality of code. These developers are also 2.3x more likely to have automated security tools, and 1.3x likely to follow open source security policies.
Derek Weeks, Vice President at Sonatype said, “Developer happiness based on mature DevOps practices is fundamental to the quality and delivery of secure software. By introducing mature DevOps practices, businesses can not only innovate faster, but they can also enhance their development teams’ job satisfaction, and ultimately differentiate themselves as employers – critical when so many companies face significant skills shortages and increased competition.”
Sonatype asked the respondents whether they were using mature or immature DevOps practices. Only 15% of them described that the company’s DevOps practices are mature. Over 49% of them said that they are working in an immature DevOps environment. The companies with mature DevOps environment have reported highest job satisfaction, employee productivity, and loyalty.
Over 55% of respondents deployed production code at least once per week. This stood at just 47% in the survey conducted by Sonatype in 2019. When it comes to security awareness, 47% of developers admit that security is an important aspect.
The biggest difference in priorities between mature and immature DevOps programmers is seen in case of container security. Mature practices invest at double the rate of immature ones. Sonatype said that open source governance, web app firewalls, and intrusion detection are the highest priorities for tech companies across the world.
