Instagram Reels is already live in Brazil, France, Germany and India. The spokesperson hints that the expansion may go even broader. The sources claim that the expansion is still a test. The short video feature is being tested with a small user group in India.
Reels are basically 15-second long videos that can be dumbsmashed along with accompanying music or dialogues. It is much like TikTok, the videos can later be shared on the user’s stories or via DMs. The most interesting part of the new feature is a new section in the explore tab called ‘Top Reels’.
In an official statement, Instagram said, “Reels is a fun, creative way for people to both express themselves and be entertained. We’re excited to bring this new version to more of our global community. No further plans to share on launch date or countries for now.”
Facebook has cancelled its own short video feature called ‘Lasso’ to create room for Instagram Reels. The company has been working on Lasso for over a year. The tech firm kept delaying the plan to expand to new regions for Lasso.
The biggest difference between Lasso and Reels is that Lasso has had its own separate app. Reels is designed to be integrated as a feature within Instagram itself. The feature allows users to create or post short, 15-second videos set to music or other audio. The feature also offers a set of editing tools like a countdown timer and those that adjust the video’s speed.
Instagram did not indicate when Reels will launch in other key markets like the US. The announcement comes at the time when the Chinese app, TikTok is banned from the largest global market.
