TikTok to offer cash bonuses to Indian employees despite app ban

The Indian government has started strict scrutiny on apps with Chinese origin. Amid the ongoing ban, TikTok’s parent company has decided to offer cash bonuses to its employees in India.

ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company has issued cash bonuses of up to Rs 4 lakh to Indian employees. In an internal memo sent out to all employees, the company had announced that it will be issuing cash bonus to eligible employees. The idea is to help employees overcome financial chillness posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The employees that have worked with the company for 26 or more working days between July and August are eligible for the bonus. The bonus will be worth half of their August’s base salary. The bonuses paid to mid-senior and senior employees range from Rs 1 to 4 lakh.

The Indian government has banned 59 Chinese apps on June 29. The list includes two apps from ByteDance – TikTok and Helo. The government banned additional 118 Chinese apps on September 2nd, this includes PUBG.

ByteDance has also applied for a tech-export license in China. The company is in talks with Oracle Corp and Walmart for the acquisition of TikTok’s US operations. The deal will help in creating a standalone US company, which will help in reviving TikTok’s operations in banned geographies.

The US President Donald Trump has ordered ByteDance to divest TikTok amid concerns over personal data of 100 million Americans that use the app.
